January 11th 2012, we will kick off our first Environmental Meeting of the year. Our speaker will be Terry Andrews from TCEQ.

Terry is currently a Team Leader with the Superfund Section of the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality. Terry has over 20 years of Superfund site management experience in Oklahoma and Texas as an environmental consultant and with state government. Terry is a Registered Professional Geologist and lives with his wife and daughter in Richmond, Texas.

SAME Adopts a Family!!!

Dear SAME Members: The holidays are fast approaching! This year our organization has adopted a family in need. The family comes to us from Pine Shadows Elementary (PSE) in Spring Branch ISD. This family consists of Dad - Dale, Mother -JoBeth (age 46) and daughter - Ivy (age 8, 4^thgrade). JoBeth originally came to PSE asking for a mattress and clothing for her daughter. Her and her daughter were sharing a mattress and weren’t getting good sleep. When she expressed this need to Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM’s) they referred her to the Communities In Schools (CIS), Project Manager at PSE where Ivy attends school. The CIS person, Heidi Rocha, contacted a local church that provided this family with a mattress and sheets. The daughter, Ivy, was so thrilled that she was jumping on the bed with joy. The mom, JoBeth was happy and very grateful. MAM’s was also able to help them with some clothing. Although these specific needs were met, the family could still use a lot of help. JoBeth did not come to the school to ask for help for Christmas, but when CIS mentioned the possibility, she began to tear up and said it would be wonderful if there was someone that could help her family. The father is a Gulf War Veteran and is in and out of the VA hospital. The mom is actively looking for a job, taking employment classes at MAM’s and going on job interviews. The daughter is attending school and is interested in getting involved in after school activities. CIS met with the mom and asked her about the needs of the family. The following is a list of needs that JoBeth said would be helpful:

Ivy (daughter) - Shoes (size 2), clothes, she can fit in size 12 slim and is growing. She is tall for her age and needs plain jeans (no holes or embellishments) to wear to school or elsewhere. Winter clothing - jacket, coat, scarf, mittens, socks. Would like Pokémon, goose bumps, vampire, and Animorph books, and would really like a guitar and skateboard. She hopes to join the school’s Run Program in the Spring and would need running shoes and gear. She also needs help with pencil grips, pencils, and handwriting books.

JoBeth (mom) - Her first wish is that Ivy’s needs are met. She then went on to mention that she would like to have iron and ironing board so the family can look nice. A study bible, book titled “Only Nuns Change Habits Overnight by Karen Linneman”, and a Christmas tree with lights and decorations so the family had something fun to do together. She would like clothes appropriate to wear to a job. She is a size Medium in shirts, size 3 in pants, size 5.5 in shoes. Winter clothing/coat, socks.

Dale (Dad) - has trouble hearing and could use a hearing aid. His clothing sizes are size Medium in shirts, Pants 32 x 30, shoe size 8, and he also needs socks.

General Household items: in addition to the iron and ironing board, cookware, kitchen towels, plates, napkins, bowls, cups, silver ware, bath towels, hand towels, and a vacuum cleaner.

I am planning on presenting the family with their gifts at the December lunch meeting. If you plan on bringing any of the listed items above please contact Franco Puentes, frpuentes@terracon.comor 713.690.8989, to coordinate. Hopefully this will help in not having duplicate gifts for the family. We will also accept cash and gift cards. We will use the cash to purchase items from the list.

Request for Statements of Qualifications – Harris County Flood Control District

The Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD or District) is seeking Statements of Qualifications from firms interested in providing services in support of the execution of its 2011 Capital Improvement Program, Maintenance Engineering, and Environmental Services activities. The anticipated services range from Surveying and Mapping, Geotechnical Engineering and Materials Testing, Planning and Feasibility Studies, General Civil Design, Environmental Consulting, Stormwater Quality Consulting, and Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning related to the implementation of new HCFCD facilities and repair of existing HCFCD facilities.
